FC Barcelona secured the top spot in Group C with a 5-2 win over Sporting Lisbon while Shakhtar Donetsk are certain of a spot in the UEFA Cup after beating FC Basel 5-0.
Thierry Henry and Pique handed FC Barcelona a comfortable 0-2 lead with goals in the 14th and 17th minutes respectively, and Lionel Messi added another shortly after the break.
Miguel Veloso then got one back in the 65th minute and a miracle seemed to be in the making when Liedson made it 2-3 a minute later.
But Marco Caneira scored an own goal another minutes later to make an end to Sporting’s aspirations, and Bojan Krkic converted a penalty in the 73rd minute for a 2-5 final result.
Shakhtar Donetsk were by far the stronger side against FC Basel. Jadson broke the deadlock on 32 minutes and Willian doubled the advantage in the 50th.
Jadson then added goals in the 65th and 72nd minute to complete a hat-trick, and Seleznov netted the home side’s fifth with 15 minutes to go.
With 13 points from five games, Barcelona are certain of finishing this group in first place. Sporting are also through with nine points and Shakhtar Donetsk’s advantage over Basel (five points gap) is enough to secure a spot in the UEFA Cup.
