(GSM) – Egypt conquered Group C as they cruised to a 2-0 victory against Benin. It is Egypt’s third win out of three matches in the group stage to advance first alongside second-place Nigeria from the group.
Egypt’s El Mohamady scored the first goal in the match from a cross. The Enppi winger swung a cross in from the right and Benin keeper Djidonou just watched it fly over his head and into the top corner.
In the 12th minute, Benin’s Angan spotted Egypt keeper El Hadari off his line and went for goal but the midfielder slices he effort high and wide.
Egypt broke down the right before Benin goalkeeper Djidonou could only palm Raouf’s header on to the post and Emad Moteab is there to fire in the rebound. A Benin defender manages to hook it out of the goalmouth but the linesman flags that it went behind the line for 2-0 at 24 minutes.
At 28 minutes, Benin have not got going yet and Raouf had a chance to make it 3-0 but could only direct his header straight at Djidonou.
The 36th minute saw an excellent move by Benin. Koukou exchanged passes with Seka on the edge of the box but Koukou, under pressure from an Egypt defender, fluffed his shot and it rolled straight through to keeper El Hadari.
In the 73rd minute, Benin were pressing Egypt. Ogunbiyi put in a low cross from the left but Aoudou could only put his side-footed shot wide.
In the 86th minute, Moteab missed a golden opportunity for 3-0. The striker was found free in the box and under no pressure, dragged his shot wide.
The match was one-sided and ended 2-0 in Egypt’s favor. Meanwhile Nigeria beat Mozambique 3-0.
As a result, Egypt and Nigeria qualify to the quarter-finals while Benin and Mozambique crash out of the African Cup of Nations.
