Quick report: Fiorentina 3-2 Bayern Munich

(GSM) – Bayern Munich lost the second leg of the Champions League round of sixteen 3-2 in a spectacular match, but advance to the quarter finals as they scored more away goals than their Italian opponents.

Bayern had a 1-2 lead to defend in Firenze, giving the home side the task of scoring one goal to beat their German opponents on away goals.

And that goal came on 28 minutes when a distance striker from Marco Marchionni was parried by the keeper but Juan Vargas stood in the right place to make it 1-0 on the rebound.

Although Bayern put pressure on their opponents, it was the Italian home team to add a second nine minutes after the break as Alberto Gilardino back-heeled to Stevan Jovetic to direct the ball into the far corner.

Bayern scored back six minutes later though with Franck Ribery provided Mark van Bommel from the wing, and the Dutchman struck past the keeper from about 20 meters.

Fiorentina needed just four minutes to eliminate the chance of a penalty-shootout however as Stevan Jovetic directed the ball through the keeper’s legs to make it 3-1.

But another minute later, it was Bayern’s other Dutchman Arjen Robben to launch an impressive shot from 30 meters, and the ball sailed into the left corner to give the Germans an away goal advantage.

No more goals were scored in the remainder of the match, as Fiorentina bow out of the tournament while Bayern advance another round.
