England successfully defended their top spot in Group 6 with a 1-3 victory in Belarus on Wednesday.

Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard put the away side in the lead after just eleven minutes but the home crowd was given new hope when Pavel Sitko netted the equaliser in the 28th.

But five minutes into the second half, it was Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney to restore England’s lead. And with sixteen minutes to go, Rooney added another to secure the victory.

With twelve points from four games, England have a very comfortable lead in this group and missing out on another major tournament has become very unlikely.
