(GSM) – Hamburg came from a goal down to take a slight 2-1 edge in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final with Standard Liège on Thursday.
The Belgians opened the scoring with the crucial away goal on 31 minutes when Dieudonne Mbokani nodded home off a corner kick for a 1-0 visitors’ lead.
Mladen Petric equalized for Hamburg from the spot on 42 minutes after Jonathan Pitroipa was tripped up by Marcos Cammozzato, and they take the lead just three minutes later.
Ruud van Nistelrooy found a sliver of space inside the Standard penalty area, and he managed to tuck in a cross from Dennis Aogo on the left to make it 2-1.
Both sides had their chances in the second half, but the result stayed 2-1 and left it all to play for in the second leg in Belgium next week.
