Liverpool began their 2008-09 Champions League with a 1-2 win at Marseille, while Atlético Madrid impressed and won 0-3 at PSV Eindhoven.
Olympique Marseille 1-2 Liverpool
It took 23 minutes for the deadlock to be broken in this match, with Marseille taking the lead through Cana.
But fans at the Velodrome stadium had only three minutes to celebrate that goal as Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard proved his worth and scored the equaliser.
And another six minutes later, Gerrard converted a spot kick to make it 1-2.
PSV Eindhoven 0-3 Atlético de Madrid
Atlético delivered a convincing performance in the Netherlands. Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero put the Spaniards ahead after just nine minutes and added a second in the 36th.
PSV tried to attack more in the first minutes after the break, but Atlético did well to defend their goal and Maniche even added a third for the visitors in the 54th minute.
