(GSM) – Olympique Lyon are a big step closer to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League following a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of the round of sixteen.
Real Madrid dominated in the opening phase but slowly allowed the French hosts to take control of the match. With some minutes to go in the first half, Lyon almost scored the opener but a well-taken volley from Argentinian Cesar Delgado hit the left post.
But Lyon did take the lead two minutes after the break, as Jean Makoun of Cameroon collected the ball in midfield, took it forward and then struck it past Iker Casillas for 1-0.
The hosts continued to dominate and hunted for a second goal, and come close on several occasions. In the 58th minute, a shot from Lisandro Lopez went only just wide of the left post.
The match was more balanced in the last half hour but Lyon remained in control, enough so to hold on to their lead and give their opponents a difficult task when the two meet again for the second leg in Madrid.
