Villarreal brought a ray of hope to Spanish football, beating Panathinaikos 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the quarter finals of the Champions League.

Following a frustrating 1-1 draw at home, pressure was on Villarreal to score in Athens. The goal came four minutes after the interbal when Ariel Ibagaza curled a shot past keeper Galinovic from the edge of the penalty area.

The Greeks reacted just minutes later though. Diego Lopez sent in a corner and Vangelis Mantzelis headed past Pepe Reina for 1-1.

But Villarreal reconquered their lead with 20 minutes to go as Ibagaza found Joseba Llorente in the penalty area, and the latter did well to fire home, 1-2.
