All English sides are through to the quarter finals stage of the Champions League as Arsenal beat AS Roma on penalties after a 1-0 result in the Italian capital city.
Arsenal began the match with a 1-0 lead to defend from the first leg, but fans at the Stadio Olimpico did not need to wait long to celebrate their side’s opening goal.
Just nine minutes had been played when well-directed cross from Francesco Totti was directed into Arsenal’s net by Juan.
No more goals were scored in regular or extra time, and a penalty shoot-out was required to decide which of the two teams was to advance to the next round.
The very first penalty, taken by Arsenal’s Eduardo, was parried by Roma keeper Doni. Pizarro and Van Persie then scored by Almunia blocked Vucinic’ weak penalty to level the score.
Walcott, Baptista, Nasri, Montella, Denilson, Totti, Toure, Aquilani, Sagna, Riise and Diaby were all successful from there on but Tonetto sent the ball well over the crossbar, allowing Arsenal to advance to the quarter finals.
