The United States of America have secured a spot in the final of the Confederations Cup, surprisingly beating European champions and favorites 2-0 in Wednesday’s semi final.

Despite all expectations, the United States were the stronger side in the first half hour. Spain keeper Iker Casillas needed to act several times to avoid his side conceding an early goal.

But that goal did come on 27 minutes when Josy Altidore’s shot was too powerful for Casillas and, after getting redirected by the goalie, went in at the left post.

Spain gained strength in the last part of the first half but passionate American defending prevented the equaliser from being scored.

After the break, Spain continued to attack but the opposing defense and an impressive keeper Tim Howard kept the ball out of the USA’s net.

In fact, the Americans went on to score a second goal on 74 minutes as a low right-winged cross from Landon Donovan initially seemed to be controlled by Sergio Ramos, but Clint Dempsey got his foot to the ball and got it past Casillas for 2-0.

There was also some bad news for the USA, as Michael Bradley conceded a red card for a rather violent foul late on.

As a result, the United States play Sunday’s final against the winner of Thursday’s semi final between South Africa and Brazil. Spain face the loser of that match in the match for third and fourth place.
