Spain are through to the next round of the Confederations Cup following a 1-0 win over Iraq in Wednesday’s Group A game.
The Iraqi side adopted a very defensive tactic, giving Spain considerable difficulties up front. When Vicente del Bosque’s men did find their way through the defense, there was always keeper Mohammed Kassid to block the possibility.
But the Spanish did get the goal they deserved on 55 minutes, when David Villa headed home from a left-winged cross to hand Spain a crucial 1-0 lead.
As ‘la Furia Roja’ successfully defended that advantage, they secured their 14th consecutive win. By doing so, they equal the world record currently held by Australia, Brazil and France.
With one point from two matches Iraq are not quite out of contention in this group, but the Asian champions do depend on results of other matches.
