South Africa lost their final Confederations Cup match 1-0 to Spain, but join the European champions in the semi finals despite the defeat.
After a goalless first half at Bloemfontein’s Free State Stadium, the Spanish did take the lead seven minutes into the second. David Villa, who a minute earlier had a penalty saved by keeper Khune, now headed home for 1-0.
Substitute Fernando Llorente made it 2-0 with a low shot 20 minutes later.
South Africa had their share of opportunities but a solid performance from keeper Pepe Reina and his defense ensured that Spain kept a clean sheet.
As Iraq only managed a draw with New Zealand, South Africa finish second in this group and play their semi final against the winners of Group A on Thursday. Spain face Group A’s runners-up a day earlier.
The victory was Spain’s 15th in a row, which is a new world record.
