(GSM) – A pair of goals by Sergio Agüero helped Atlético Madrid through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Wednesday as the Spaniards drew 2-2 at Sporting Lisbon, securing an away goals win.
After the first leg in Spain ended 0-0, both sides had everything to play for at Estádio José Alvalade.
The visitors broke through first inside three minutes when Kun Agüero latched onto Antonio López’s throughball for the opening goal.
Now needing two without reply to progress, Sporting pulled one back in the 19th minute when Liedson headed home Carlos Saleiro’s back-post cross.
Agüero, though, restored Atlético’s lead in the 33rd minute at 2-1 when he coolly slotted past Rui Patrício from José Antonio Reyes’ threaded pass.
Just before half-time, Sporting again levelled the match when Anderson Polga put one past David de Gea, but they never got the goal they needed to seal their progress.
