Luxembourg secured one of their most famous results ever on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory at Switzerland in European World Cup qualifying Group 2.
Luxembourg captain Jeff Strasser stunned the hosts when he put the minnows in front on 28 minutes, but Switzerland looked to be storming back when Blaise N’Kufo bagged his second goal in as many internationals to level proceedings 1-1 at the interval.
Luxembourg fought valiantly throughout the second half, and it appeared as if they would have to settle for a draw until Alphonse Leweck punched home the winner four minutes from time.
The win was Luxembourg’s most famous since a 1995 win over the Czech Republic in European Championship qualifying, and it was a huge rebound from their opening qualifier in this campaign, a 3-0 home loss to Greece on Saturday.
The win is Luxembourg’s first since a 2007 friendly against the Gambia.
