Villarreal and Arsenal held each other to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final stage.
Villarreal needed only ten minutes to allow their home fans to celebrate the opening goal. Giuseppe Rossi controlled the ball in midfield and found Marco Senna, whose following short from 20 meters sails past keeper Almunia for 1-0.
But the Spaniards couldn’t hold on their lead and allowed Arsenal to equalise on 66 minutes. Emmanuel Adebayor controlled a Fabregas pass with the chest and then volleyed home for 1-1.
No more goals were scored in this match, although referee Tom Henning Ovrebo did yellow-card four Arsenal players. This could have a possible effect on the return leg.
The second leg is scheduled to be played at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on April 15th.
