Quiet deadline day in January transfer window

Robbie Keane was the biggest mover on deadline dayThe usual flurries of transfers on the deadline day of the transfer window didn’t seem to happen. The last few minutes of the transfer window are usual quite exciting but this year was dull. Only one major player moved clubs and that was after the English deadline shut.

The total amount spent by English clubs is believed to around £30million, not a lot by usual transfer window deadline day standards.

Although it was quiet there will still some deals completed and I will go through some of the key signings below.

Transfers

Robbie Keane (Tottenham to Celtic loan)

Robbie Keane was the biggest mover on the deadline day of the transfer window. The lifelong Celtic fan has temporarily moved to Parkhead in search of regular first team football. On his arrival he was greeted by thousands of adoring fans.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed that the move is unlikely to become permanent at the end of the season and Celtic would probably struggle to pay the fee demanded for the Republic of Ireland international. Keane has revealed his aim while at the club is to help the Hoops regain the SPL title. Could the signing of Robbie Keane inspire a Celtic comeback in the title race?

Victor Moses (Crystal Palace to Wigan £2.5million)

Wigan have strengthened their strike-force with the signing of the precocious striker. Moses is highly rated and had previously been linked with Manchester City and Real Madrid. The Nigerian-born youngster has already played for England under-19s and has stated that he hopes the move to Wigan will help him realise his dream of playing International football for England at senior level.

Asmir Begovic (Portsmouth to Stoke £3.25million)

The highly-rated young Bosnian keeper Asmir Begovic completed a move from cash-strapped Portsmouth to Stoke right on the deadline. Stoke were believed to have also been interested in signing Begovic’s teammate David James but it is 22 year-old Begovic who arrives at the Britannia not the England ace.

Adam Johnson (Middlesbrough to Manchester City £7million)

The biggest money move of deadline day of the transfer window, the young winger had been linked with numerous clubs in the past including Sunderland and Everton. However it was Manchester City’s megabucks that secured the England under-21 international services. He is seen as one for the future but could be a useful squad player to have.

Alan Hutton (Tottenham to Sunderland loan)

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has brought in the Scottish international full-back to help strengthen his struggling defence. However the former-Rangers stars qualities lie more in his attacking play than his defensive play. He should prove a decent signing for the Mackems, especially on-loan.

Benni McCarthy (Blackburn to West Ham £2.5million)

The South African striker has been brought in to help West Ham’s goal shy attack. He struggled to hold down a place in the Blackburn side and he will be hoping for first team football with the Hammers. The signing will seem like a gamble but it will prove a masterstroke if the 32 year-old scores the goals to keep the club in the Premier League.

Mido (Middlesbrough to West Ham loan)

The Egyptian has had more clubs than Tiger Woods and will be hoping to finally prove a success in England. The signing of the 26 year-old is another gamble by Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola, but he’s in a no lose situation really. If he doesn’t prove a success he can send the former Middlesbrough and Wigan ace on his way.

Marcelo Moreno (Shakhtar Donetsk to Wigan loan)

The 22 year-old striker arrived at the Latics after failing to impress while on-loan at Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.  The Bolivian ace has three and a half years left on his Shakhtar contract but Moreno struggled to adapt to the Ukrainian league.
