(GSM) – A late injury-time penalty by Iván Hurtado gave Deportivo Quito a 1-0 victory over Ecuadorean rivals Emelec in Copa Libertadores play on Thursday night.

Emelec came into the game with zero points in Group 5, and they desperately needed a result at home in Guayaquil to stay alive in the tournament.

But they struggled to work their way through a stout Quito defense, and it got no better for them in the 79th minute when defender Gabriel Achilier earned a second booking.

It appeared Emelec would hang on for a point, but Quito won a penalty late, and Hurtado beat Marcelo Elizaga in the Emelec goal three minutes into added time to snatch the victory.

Quito are level on points with second-placed Cerro, and both are a point behind Internacional of Brazil with two games left to play.
