(GSM) – Michael Arroyo’s goal in the second half was all Deportivo Quito needed on Thursday in a 1-0 Copa Libertadores win over country rivals Emelec.
Quito and Emelec came into the day as the two bottom sides in Group 5, but Quito could stay within three points of Uruguayan leaders Cerro at the head of the group.
The two sides know each other well, and spent much of the match feeling each other out.
Emelec’s resistance eventually broke down, though, in the 64th minute when he latched onto the ball before firing a shot beyond Emelec goalkeeper Marcelo Elizaga.
The visitors could not muster an equalizer, and their hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 could be all done.
