Tottenham striker Harry Kane is the favourite to win the Premier League Golden Boot this season

It seems that this season more than ever there is a raft of players who can’t seem to stop scoring goals.

The majority of them are players their teams could not live without. The top five scorers are unsurprisingly all from teams in the top seven of the Premier League table.

At the rate that the league’s leading scorers are finding the net, Harry Kane’s total of 25 will be smashed this season. The current five strikers will be hoping to not only guide their teams to success this season but to also win the Premier League Golden Boot in the process.

Here are the current top five contenders to win the award:

Romelu Lukaku (Everton, scored 17 goals)

The Belgian striker has been prolific in the last five seasons of the Premier League, despite being just 23 years of age. Everton are seventh and hoping to push into that top six before the end of the campaign. If they are to do so this season, then the striker’s stellar form could be the key to that aim.

Rather impressively the striker has now scored five goals in his last three Premier League appearances. All of the Belgian striker’s goals have come from open play, as he is no longer the Toffees designated penalty kick taker.

Harry Kane (Tottenham, scored 17 goals)

Last season’s golden boot winner has scored four goals in his last three top-flight outings, having scored his second league hat-trick of the campaign in Spurs 4-0 mauling of Stoke on Sunday afternoon. Like Lukaku, who is the same age, Kane has been prolific in the English top-flight for the last few seasons.

The England international is the favourite to win the golden boot at odds of 6/4, with his case boosted by the fact that the striker is Tottenham’s penalty taker.

Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal, scored 17 goals)

The vibrant Chilean enjoyed a rare afternoon off at the weekend. However, he is level with the two young hotshots in terms of goalscoring. The 28-year-old has enjoyed playing as the central striker for much of the campaign for the Gunners.

French striker Olivier Giroud was briefly back in the team, with Sanchez moved out wide, but it seems Sanchez is now back in favour in the central role, which is good news for his chances of beating his rivals to the individual award.

The way the Gunners have performed this season it may be the only thing the former Barcelona star wins this season. He is another who has spot-kick duties for his team.

Diego Costa (Chelsea, scored 16 goals)

The Spaniard has been back to his mean and moody best this season and is seemingly firing the Blues to the Premier League title. The striker seems to have put a bust-up with the Chelsea coaching staff to one-side and done what he does best, terrify top-flight defences.

Costa scored in the Blues 3-1 victory over Swansea to end a three-game goal drought. No doubt he will contribute a lot more goals to the Blues title charge between now and the end of the campaign.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Manchester United, scored 15 goals)

The ever-modest Swedish superstar has been a big hit for United this season. On Sunday he had a break from Premier League action. However, he scored a braced to help United defeat Southampton 3-2 in the EFL Cup final.

The 35-year-old has proven his doubters wrong this season. The veteran star has carried on from where he left off last season at PSG by being prolific. United will need him to shine for the rest of the campaign if they are to make the top four this season.

Some worthy of mention

There are some other players who are worthy of a mention, in the likes of Jermain Defoe. The Sunderland forward has scored 14 times, despite his team being rock-bottom of the table. Five of his goals have come from the penalty spot.

The likes of Tottenham’s Dele Alli, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and of course not forgetting City superstar Sergio Aguero are also lurking just below the top five.

However, at the moment it seems the Golden Boot winner will probably come from one of the current top five scorers in the league. The race to win the award promises to be a goal-filled and highly entertaining one that is for sure. It could be tighter than ever.
