With AC Milan reportedly failing to agree terms with former Juventus defender Martin Caceres, a move to the Premier League is back on the cards for the Uruguay defender.
Caceres was believed to be close to joining Crystal Palace during the final days of the January transfer market, but Sam Allardyce securing a loan deal to Liverpool centre-back Mamadou Sakho and the 29-year-old was tipped to join AC Milan rather than moving to England.
Still as Caceres turned down the chance to become a Rossoneri player, Sunderland and Southampton are now reported to be eyeing the experienced defender.
The ESPN has learned that Caceres is eyed as a replacement for Jose Fonte and injured Virgil van Dijk and that Southampton boss Claude Puel is prepared to offer Caceres a short-term deal to bring him to St Mary’s.
Premier League strugglers Sunderland are also in the race for the centre-back as they look to bolster their ranks in the relegation battle.
