Napoli have launched a bid to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, the Mail Online understands.
The Serie A runners up were hoping to agree a loan deal for Queens Park Rangers’ Julio Cesar, though Harry Redknapp has said that he will only leave Loftus Road on a permanent deal.
New Napoli boss Rafael Benitez will now turn his attention to Reina, who he took to Anfield from Villarreal back in 2006.
The Spain international’s future at Anfield has been uncertain after the Merseyside club signed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland, though he has always maintained that he is happy to remain with the Reds.
However, with the 30 year old one of the highest earners at the club, Liverpool may well listen to offers from other clubs.
The former Barcelona man has missed just nineteen league games in his eight years with Liverpool, winning both the League Cup and the FA Cup in that time.
