Liverpool and England winger Raheem Sterling is being lined up to start England’s opening World Cup game against Italy. The 19-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic campaign for the Reds, scoring nine goals and making five assists in the Premier League last season.

England manager Roy Hodgson has been very complimentary about the youngster this summer, and has hinted that he will play a pivotal part in England’s World Cup journey.

As a result, Betfair are giving odds of 11/10 for Sterling to be in the starting XI against Italy. He was on the bench in two of England’s last three international friendlies, but is being tipped by various sources to play a more important role as Italy are there for the taking.

Hodgson is keen to have a Liverpool core to the England side, and with Sterling to be playing with the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson, it should benefit the Three Lions on the pitch.
