Dundee United's weekend match against Rangers has been postponed as a mark of respect after United chairman Eddie Thompson lost his long battle against prostate cancer.

Thompson died in the early hours of Wednesday and the Scottish Premier League quickly confirmed that the Ibrox fixture would be put off.

Lex Gold, the SPL's executive chairman, said: “Eddie's incredible enthusiasm for Dundee United, the SPL and football in general made him an inspiration to many. He is a great loss to our game.”

The SPL also confirmed there would be one minute of applause for Thompson before all other top-flight games in Scotland this weekend.
