Ranieri credits players with Roma success

Claudio Ranieri refused to take all the credit for Roma’s 1-0 win over AC Milan, despite making the bold move of dropping Francesco Totti.

Roma captain and stalwart Totti found himself on the bench for the crucial match away to the Serie A table-toppers, but the gamble paid off, with Roma snatching a narrow win to drag themselves back into title contention.

If the move had backfired Ranieri would have found himself in the firing line of supporters and the press alike, but despite orchestrating an invaluable win, the 59-year-old preferred to give credit to the players.

“This result means a lot in the home of the league leaders,” Ranieri said.

“Do I feel this is my victory? No. I am paid to make decisions and take responsibility when things go wrong. It went well today and I think it’s right to praise the players.”

“In the first half Alexander Doni and the defence managed to safe-guard the clean sheet, especially in that one-on-one with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”

“The team was very united and we knew how to suffer under pressure, then emerge in the long run. It’s a sign all the work we’re doing every day pays off.”

“We could’ve created more in attack, but it wasn’t easy against this very aggressive Milan side. They are an excellent squad and deserve to be top of the table.”

Former Inter Milan forward Adriano received the nod ahead of Totti in the starting line-up and Ranieri was encouraged by what he saw, tipping the Brazilian’s rejuvenation to continue in the second half of the season.

“I was very satisfied with Adriano’s performance, as he held up the ball and gave the team breathing space,” Ranieri said. “You’ll see he will become even more important to Roma in the new year.”

Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri believes his team’s failure to make the breakthrough during their period of first-half dominance ultimately cost them the game.

“Analysing the game, we created a great deal in the first half without running any real risks, but after the break Milan did lose intensity all over the pitch,” Allegri said.

“It’s a shame, as we had the game under control and wanted to win tonight. We should’ve broken the deadlock before half-time.”

“It’s a pity to end the year with a defeat, but we can learn from this result. It’s true that we lost at home to both Juventus and Roma, but overall we can be happy with our record in head-to-heads.”

“Let’s not forget we are still top of the table and at least three points clear, so it’s nothing to be sniffed at.”
