Lorient full-back Raphaele Guerreiro has revealed that he rejected an opportunity to join Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
Following some impressive displays in French Ligue 1, the talented footballer became a top target for the Saints, who were keen on bringing him to Parc des Princes.
However, having just broken into the Portugal national team, Guerreiro did not want to ruin his chances of playing at the Euro 2016 finals by joining PSG, where he would probably struggle for playing time.
“There have been some contacts between the presidents and my agents last summer,” the 22-year-old confessed to Le Parisien.
“But I told them it was not the best choice for me. I thought it was best to complete the season at Lorient, rather than being a substitute at PSG.
”Usually, I would give anything to go there because it is PSG. But, I do not regret it. I plan to go to Euro with Portugal. And I need to play to get closer to Selecao.”
This appears to have been the right choice considering that Guerreiro is almost certain to make Portugal’s Euro 2016 squad now that Fabio Coentrao has been ruled out through injury.
The talented full-back, who can also operate as a left winger, will be vying Benfica defender Eliseu for the starting berth on the left hand side.
