Reading set to sign Ferdinand

Reading are close to completing the signing of defender Anton Ferdinand, according to Sky Sports.

The 29 year old centre-back is undergoing a medical with the Championship club, who kicked off the new campaign with a 2-2 draw with fellow promotion hopefuls Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Ferdinand, the younger brother of Queens Park Rangers defender Rio, has spent the last two years in Turkey first with Bursaspor and then Antalyaspor, for whom he made just three league appearances last season.

The former England U21 international began his career with West Ham United and was part of the squad that reached the 2006 FA Cup final, while he also had spells with Sunderland and QPR before moving overseas.

Nigel Adkins’ side turn their attention to the Capital One Cup tomorrow evening when they face League Two side Newport County at the Madejski Stadium in the first round of the competition.
