Whistles sounded around the Bernabeu after Real Madrid slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Mallorca in their final home game of the season here on Sunday.

With Real assured of second place and Mallorca safe from relegation the game will be remembered as Fabio Cannavaro’s final game in front of the Madrid fans and possibly also the last for Juande Ramos, as he is tipped to leave following elections in the summer.

Real began with plenty of possession but they lacked movement from Raul Gonzalez and Klass Huntelaar in attack.

They did get the breakthrough though when Gonzalo Higuain headed home after 20 minutes but Juan Arango equalised minutes later against the run of play.

Cannavaro left the pitch to applause ten minutes into the second half but following his substitution Real struggled to deal with the Mallorca attack.

Cleber Santana scored a superb goal, beating four players before clipping the ball into the top corner and then the victory was confirmed with another fine strike by Alhassane Keita.

On Saturday Barcelona celebrated their league triumph despite losing 1-0 to Osasuna.

There was a fireworks display as Carles Puyol received the league trophy at the Camp Nou and was then carried around the pitch on the shoulders of the players.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola allowed his team a night of celebration before they focus on the Champions League final against Manchester United this week.

Speaking on the pitch to the crowd, coach Pep Guardiola assured: “We will not let you down on Wednesday. Thank you for your support but now we must go and sleep to prepare ourselves.

While for Barca the match was simply a prelude for the celebrations, it had considerable importance for Osasuna, who despite the win remain in the bottom three.

Walter Pandiani goal gave Osasuna a 1-0 win against a Barca side made up largely of reserves with Guardiola resting players ahead of the Champions League final.

It was a disappointing night for Barca youngster Marc Muniesa who was dismissed for a crude challenge and Guardiola himself was sent off minutes later for protesting.

A 90th minute strike from Diego Perotti gave Sevilla a 1-0 win over Deportivo la Coruna which assures the Andalucian side of Champions League football next season.

Sevilla had plenty of possession but struggled to break down a resolute Depor defence, that was though until the final minute when Perotti appeared in the box to convert an Adriano cross from the right-wing.

A hat-trick from Diego Forlan consolidated Atletico Madrid’s position in the top four while the Uruguayan has over-taken Samuel Eto’o as the top scorer in the Primera Division with 31 goals.

Athletic Bilbao went behind to a Raul Garcia volley from outside the area but the cup finalists drew level midway through the second half with Xabi Etxeita scoring.

Forlan emphatically gave Atletico the win though with two fine goals before he completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

Villarreal leapfrogged Valencia with a resounding 3-1 win over their local rivals and remain with an outside chance of a place in the Champions League, while Valencia can now hope for nothing more than Europa League football next season.

A brace from Joseba Llorente gave Villarreal a commanding lead and then while David Villa did pull a goal back before half time, Ruben Cani assured the home side of victory mid-way through the second half.

At the other end of the table both Recreativo Huelva and Numancia have been relegated. Bottom side Recreativo’s hopes of a miracle faded in a 1-0 defeat against Racing Santander, with Nicola Zigic scoring, while a Roberto Soldado strike for Getafe gave them a 1-0 win over Numancia.

Sporting Gijon remain outside the relegation zone on goal difference after their 2-1 win over Valladolid.

Espanyol will be playing in the topflight next season after completing a remarkable turnaround with little more than a month ago appearing relegation certainties.

Their survival was assured thanks to a 3-0 win, with a brace from Ivan Alonso and a Ferran Corominas strike.

Real Betis go into their final match of the season looking nervously over their shoulders after their 1-1 draw with Malaga leaves them one point off the drop zone.
