Real Madrid begin their Champions League defence tonight at home to Basel, with the Spaniards having endured a torrid time in the league. Carlo Ancelotti’s men finally ended their 12-year wait for “La Decima” their tenth Champions League crown, but not many are backing them to replicate the feat this season.

However, they’ve always showcased their best form in Europe, and this season could still see them go close to retaining their trophy with Real boasting the best attacking talent in the world. Liverpool, Basel and Ludogorets are the three other teams to beat in the group, with Liverpool likely to provide the biggest threat to their aim of a flawless group campaign.

Ladbrokes are backing Real with odds of 1/5 to win their group as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema should blow away the competition early on. The one worry for Los Blancos will be their two recent defeats in the league, but Ancelotti won’t allow another crumble as he will lose his job if Real ended the season trophyless.
