Spanish giants Real Madrid made a move for Sporting CP starlet Gelson Martins two years ago, AS has revealed.
The 21-year-old produced a memorable display as Real Madrid came from a goal down to defeat the Lions on Wednesday and he was later congratulated by a number of los Blancos stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo.
And it has now been revealed that the Spanish giants had recognised the winger’s potential some two years ago.
Namely, Real Madrid offered to sign Martins on loan with an option to buy as they wanted to add him to the B squad that was coached by none other than Zinedine Zidane.
However, Sporting CP chiefs rejected the proposal as they were convinced that Martins would go on to become an important player in the senior team.
That could easily prove one of their best decisions yet as the outstanding display at Santiago Bernabeu was enough to suggest the talented footballer has a great future ahead of him.
