Zinedine Zidane’s team looking good for the title
The penultimate weekend in La Liga saw wins for the top two which means the title race will go down to the very last day while at the bottom Sporting Gijon were relegated despite a win at Eibar.
Ronaldo at the double for Madrid
Real Madrid made light work of Sevilla, although their first goal was controversial to say the least. Nacho Hernandez opened the scoring with a quick free kick that caught the visitors out and sparked loud and long protests. However, the referee allowed it to stand and it wasn’t long before Cristiano Ronaldo doubled their lead with his 400th goal in Real Madrid colours. After hitting the post and the bar Stevan Jovetic deservedly grabbed one back and there were a few nervy minutes before Ronaldo smashed home at the near post to restore Madrid’s two-goal lead. Toni Kroos then completed the scoring to leave the hosts 4/1 to claim the title ahead of their last two games against Eibar and Malaga.
Neymar grabs hat-trick for Barcelona
Barcelona continue to match Madrid stride for stride with a 4-1 win at Las Palmas. Neymar was the star for the visitors bagging his first away hat-trick for the Blaugrana with Luis Suarez also on target. Pedro Bigas had briefly given the hosts hope after making it 2-1 before Neymar finished the game off to maintain Barcelona’s hopes and ensure the title race goes to the last day.
Atletico seal third place despite draw
Atletico Madrid confirmed they will finish third despite being held to a 1-1 draw at Real Betis. The hosts actually went ahead through Dani Ceballos but Stefan Savic equalised 10 minutes later to salvage a point.
More misery for Adams at Osasuna
Tony Adams’ miserable spell at Granada continued with yet another defeat as La Liga’s bottom two sides faced off. Jhon Steven Mondragon put the hosts ahead and although Granada levelled it through Gustavo Ramos, Kenan Kodro grabbed the winner from close range with just 15 minutes left.
Deportivo safe after Villarreal draw
Deportivo will play in La Liga next season after a goalless draw with Villarreal confirmed their safety. However, it was a blow for Villarreal who cannot now overtake Sevilla in fourth and face a battle to finish in the top six with the club just a point ahead of Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad in fifth and sixth.
Leganes also safe with Athletic draw
Leganes joined Deportivo in staying up with a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao. Aritz Adruriz put the hosts ahead but Alexander Szymanowski headed home the equaliser to ensure safety.
Alaves sign off in style
Alaves put in a superb display in their last home game of the season beating Celta Vigo 3-1 to make it five straight Liga defeats for Celta who face Real Madrid in midweek. Manu Garcia, Zouhair Feddal and Deyverson were on target for the hosts although there was some consolation for Celta in the shape of Iago Aspas’s penalty. That goal was his 18th of the season in Liga – the first Celta player to reach that amount since 1956.
Sporting relegated despite Eibar win
It was a harsh weekend for Sporting Gijon who did all they could to stay up, beating Eibar 1-0 for just their second away win of the season. Burgui scored the only goal of the game but it was not enough as results elsewhere sent them down.
Sociedad’s European hopes hit
Real Sociedad failed to take advantage of draws for Athletico Bilbao and Villarreal after being held to a 2-2 draw by Malaga. The result leaves Sociedad outside of the European spots but still with hoping for a top six finish ahead of the final round of fixtures.
Espanyol beat Valencia
Valencia picked up another win, beating Espanyol 1-0, thanks to a single goal from José Luis Gayà which consigned the hosts to a third straight defeat.
