Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has resigned following a vote-rigging scandal. After initially threatening to depart and then changing his mind on Thursday, a board meeting has sealed his fate. Calderon has been forced to step down.

“It’s tough to be president, but it’s harder working down a mine,” he said this week. “I have no interest in staying here for life.” Marca newspaper has reported that the 57-year-old lawyer manipulated a general assembly vote in December. Vice president Vicente Boluda will take over the president’s duties until a snap election is called.
