Knowing that victory on Saturday would see them briefly climb to the top of the La Liga standings, Real Madrid will welcome a struggling Espanyol to the Bernabéu on Saturday lunchtime.

Starting with the hosts, while they may not have been at their best last weekend, Real Madrid’s 2-1 win away at Alaves has seen Los Blancos extend on what has been an eye-catching run of form. Led by La Liga leading marksman Karim Benzema who has now bagged seven goals in his last five appearances, the former champions are enjoying an eight-match unbeaten run that stems back to the start of October. Also with a spot in the knockout stage of this year’s Champions League in the bag, Head Coach Zinedine Zidane is also yet to see his side lose a single La Liga matchup at the Bernabéu since opening the 2019/2020 campaign.

As for the visitors, while Real Madrid might find themselves in a battle at the top of the La Liga standings, Espanyol are still at the heart of a relegation scrap. Opening December sat five points adrift of safety and suddenly seen to be one of the leading contenders to be hit with the drop this season, the Europa League outfit have lost four of their last five domestic contests and they have failed to record a La Liga victory since the 27th of October. With the mood in Pablo Machín’s camp arguably the lowest it has been in recent memory, there is no doubt that Saturday’s trip to the Spanish capital could be yet another overwhelming contest.
