According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid were interested in bringing Jurgen Klopp to the club as Zinedine Zidane’s replacement. The Frenchman left earlier this year at the top of his game, after helping Real towards three consecutive Champions League successes. Alas, despite Klopp managing opposite Zidane in the Champions League final earlier this year, he was indeed considered to be the Spanish giants’ number one target.
Julen Lopetegui was the man who was eventually given the job although in addition to Klopp, Massimiliano Allegri and Mauricio Pochettino were said to be in the running as well. The Pochettino link is perhaps the least surprising, given that he’s been tipped for the role in the past. Klopp is currently contracted to remain at Anfield until 2022 and has already spent three years on Merseyside, although if Lopetegui is sacked and the right kind of offer comes in, there’s always a chance that his head could be turned.
