Real Madrid were never interested in signing Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain, according to AS.
Apparently, the whole business was just a plot devised by Florentino Perez and Nasser Al-Khelaifi to push Barcelona to the limit when it comes to the Catalans’ intention to bring the Brazilian back – to make them truly offer their maximum. The two club presidents have a good working relationship, and this “small favour” that Perez did for PSG would then be kept in mind in the future, when Real come calling for their true target – Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe’s current contract with the Ligue 1 champions runs until the summer of 2022, and at Real they believe that him not signing a new one holds the key to their hopes of bringing him to the Santiago Bernabeu. If he doesn’t extend the deal by the end of this season, PSG would be more open to a possibility of selling him in order to avoid doing it later for much less.
