Tottenham midfielder David Bentley is eager to leave White Hart Lane, manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed.
Spurs are chasing the signature of LA Galaxy star David Beckham, who would most likely push Bentley further down the queue for first-team action at the club.
The 26-year-old Bentley has been linked to Spurs’ Premier League rivals Newcastle and Fulham.
Redknapp said the former Arsenal and Blackburn player was itching for more game time that the manager could not assure him of this season.
“David did well at the end of last season but he wants to play,” Redknapp said.
“It’s difficult. He’s not happy because he’s not playing and I understand that.”
“I wouldn’t want him to sit there and say ‘I’ll take my wages’. He needs to play somewhere and there are a few clubs that want him.”
Bentley has appeared just three times for Spurs this season.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew confirmed he has spoken with management at Tottenham regarding possible transfers, but was coy on whether Bentley’s name was raised.
“I can’t say we haven’t spoken to Spurs, because I was speaking to them last week, and we talked about players,” Pardew said.
“I think they want some movement, and we want some movement. Whether we take a player from Spurs is a question I can’t answer, but we’re looking at the market, and we want to bring an offensive player in.”
