Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed reports that Spurs are tracking Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgian defender, who has just over a year left on his deal at Amsterdam ArenA is one of the hottest commodities in European football and he is widely expected to leave Ajax for greener pastures at the end of the season.
The Belgian international recently revealed that joining a top Premier League club is one of his priorities and it appears that Arsenal and Tottenham will be battling for the player’s signature.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp admits he has been following the highly rated defender for a while now.
“He’s a player I’ve watched. He’s a very good player”, Redknapp told the BBC.
“But there are lots of clubs interested in him. We’ve not spoken to the club, he’s just a player I’ve watched along with loads of other players this year.”
Vertonghen is essentially a centre-back, but he is equally adept at playing left-back or holding midfielder and it is this versatility that is one of his biggest assets.
The 25-year-old had a major role to play in Ajax’s title winning season, having scored 7 goals in 30 Eredivisie games.
