Redknapp cools title talk

Harry Redknapp was frustrated at dropping points to Wolves at White Hart Lane and emphasised thoughts of a title challenge remained distant.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Redknapp reflected on a missed opportunity against Mick McCarthy’s team but gave credit to the visitors for stifling his Tottenham side.

“I’ve never said to anybody we’re going to win the league,” Redknapp said.

“I only answered the question: ‘Is it possible?’ Of course it’s possible. It’s possible for Liverpool to win the league too if they went on a run of 12, 13 games – it’s possible.”

“I know where we’re at and if we can get a Champions League position again this year it will be a great season for us.”

“It’s difficult because there’s six very strong teams up there.”

“To finish above Arsenal, which we’ve only ever done once since the Premier League started, that will be very difficult, let alone finishing above Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United.”

“To finish in the top four would be a good season for us.”

Redknapp was also asked about potential transfer targets but the Spurs boss remained coy.

“I like my team. I struggle to get (Jermain) Defoe in my team because Rafa (Rafael van der Vaart) plays there,” Redknapp said.

“I struggle to get Niko Kranjcar in who should be playing somewhere. I don’t really want to give myself another problem by bringing another decent player in.”

“(Steven) Pienaar doesn’t start – he’s a good player. It’s difficult. Unless I could find somebody to make a difference to us.”

McCarthy meanwhile heaped praise onto his players after they fought off a late Spurs onslaught to snare a precious point in their fight to avoid relegation.

Wolves led through Steven Fletcher’s opener before being pegged back by a Luka Modric strike in the second half, but their manager was not fazed by the equaliser and instead applauded their battling display.

“I’m very proud of the performance and think I am entitled to be,” McCarthy told Sky Sports.

“We have had to defend, as everybody is saying this week, against potential Premier League winners.”

“I think we have been great. I’m delighted with the performance.”
