Harry Redknapp believes morale at Tottenham has been transformed by new arrivals following an unsettled pre-season at White Hart Lane.
Spurs endured a difficult build-up to the 2011/12 campaign, with key midfielder Luka Modric publicly agitating for a move to London rivals Chelsea.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy made good on his promise to retain the Croatian’s services, and the arrival of Scott Parker and Emmanuel Adebayor have gone some way to improving what had reportedly become an uneasy atmosphere at the club.
“I’ve been around football clubs long enough to be able to sense when things are right and when they’re not,” Spurs manager Redknapp said.
“And I could see that things here weren’t right.”
“I could see that Luka wanted to go at the time and other players who were close to him felt for him, and there were other players wanting to leave as they weren’t playing.”
“I think that we changed it around.”
“Scott Parker came in, fantastic. Adebayor’s come in, brilliant. Started great.”
“Brad Friedel gives me another great goalkeeper to go with the two I have already. And so we look a good team.”
“And last week against Liverpool I was very, very confident going into the game that we would win.”
Redknapp’s instinct was proven correct in Sunday’s match, as Spurs handed nine-man Liverpool a comprehensive 4-0 defeat.
Modric was among the scorers at White Hart Lane, and Redknapp is confident the 26-year-old is now in the right frame of mind to give his all for Tottenham this season.
“Luka’s fine,” Redknapp said.
“He was great last week. It was a great performance from him last week. He’s a top, top player.”
The Wigan Athletic side of Roberto Martinez are Tottenham’s opponents in the English Premier League on Saturday, a team and manager held in high regard by the Spurs boss.
“I like the manager, I think he’s fantastic,” Rednapp said.
“Great young manager, Roberto Martinez, I think he’s got a great future.”
“And I like the way he plays, I like the way he gets his team playing football.”
“I think the chairman there is excellent. Dave Whelan, real football man. He’s put his money into Wigan and took the club onto where they are now, done a fantastic job there.”
