Redknapp impressed with Caulker

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp believes defender Steven Caulker has a big future at the club after impressing at Swansea.

The centre-back has been on a season-long loan in Wales and has struck up a solid partnership with Ashley Williams, receiving plaudits for his performances.

However, the England Under-21 international will have to watch from the stands on Sunday as his loan agreement prevents him from playing against his parent club.

The Spurs boss said: “Caulker has done very well for them; he has had a great season.

“He is only a young player. We like him and it has been a great experience for him to play for them this year.”

Redknapp’s comments seem to suggest he intends to bring Caulker back to White Hart Lane next season, even if it’s only to provide cover for his first-choice centre-backs.

Caulker himself said: “I feel like I’ve really progressed this year and I personally think I’ll go back to Tottenham a better player and ready to fight for my position.

“I think I’ve improved from the first month or so of the season and I’ve really enjoyed learning my way with Swansea.

“I always felt the key thing for me to continue my development was to play games and that’s happened at Swansea.

“I don’t want that to stop and I’m sure I’ll sit down in the summer and see where I’m at. But if I go back to Tottenham next season I want to be playing.”

Redknapp is still being coveted as the man to succeed Fabio Capello with England, and Swans manager Brendan Rodgers is currently the hot favourite to step into the managerial void at White Hart Lane if Redknapp does leave.

Whoever is in charge of Spurs next season should have a considerable amount of spending money at his disposal.

“Everything is in place for the club to keep progressing now,” Redknapp said.

“But you have to keep investing in players. I think Tottenham will do that next year, we will look to improve the team again next year.”
