Redknapp will have to sell stars before he can buy

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has been told he will have to sell some of his star players before he can bring new faces to White Hart Lane.

Redknapp believes Tottenham are capable of challenging for a top-four finish in the Premier League next season if he can land two or three high class signings.

But Tottenham’s directors will not give Redknapp anymore cash to spend because they financed big-money deals for Robbie Keane, Wilson Palicios and Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window to help avoid relegation.

That means he must first trim his playing staff, helping to bring in extra funds and slash the wage bill, before he can turn his attention to new recruits.

“We have spent all our money already in keeping the club in the Premier League,” Redknapp said.

“We saw against Liverpool that we are a little short because we had some key players missing.

“We would like to add some players in the summer and I have some targets, but I will have to raise the money to go after them.

“We will have to wheel and deal because we used what money there was to bring in (Robbie) Keane and (Wilson) Palacios to keep us in this league.”
