(GSM) – Liverpool and Spain shot-stopper Jose Reina hopes that Liverpool can retain the services of Steven Gerrard amid speculation in Spain that the English midfielder is a top priority for Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid look set for another summer revolution.
The former Chelsea and Internazionale boss is a keen admirer of Gerrard after he tried to land the England international during his time at Stamford Bridge.
And it now seems, according to the Spanish sports daily Marca, the Portuguese chief is preparing another bid for the 30-year-old this summer.
Gerrard has cut a frustrated figure at times this season as Liverpool continued to underachieve, ultimately finishing seventh in the Premier League, leading many to suggest that the time is right for the Reds skipper to move on.
However Liverpool team-mate Reina sees things a little differently, and said: “I hope Gerrard will not go to Real Madrid and that he will stay with Liverpool for a long time, that he will be with us for the rest of his career.
“I understand that something will happen, that Real Madrid are interested in Gerrard because Mourinho knows him very well and he is a footballer who can play in any team in the world.
“Gerrard is in the elite, one of the 10 best in the world because he is a very complete player. Hopefully they won’t take him.”
