Nigel Reo-Coker has decided to leave Bolton following their relegation from the Premier League.
The 28-year-old, who joined the club on a free transfer from Aston Villa last summer, activated a release clause in his contract that allows him to walk away from the Trotters.
Reo-Coker went on to make 37 appearances for Bolton and even captained the side on occasion, and, despite asking him to stay, manager Owen Coyle was happy of the respect and honesty he showed the club.
“I was clear with Nigel. I asked him straight away whether he wanted to stay and be a part of what we are going to do next season,” Coyle told the club’s official website.
“He was honest and up front with us, because that is the type of man he is, and said that he wanted to exercise the clause in his contract, and so we wish him well.”
Bolton also revealed on Friday that 11 further players have been released from the club following their relegation.
Some of the most notable names are striker Ivan Klasnic and Ricardo Gardner, who has been with the club for 14 years.
Coyle had special praise for the midfielder after his long service to the club.
“I would also like to thank the players that are leaving the club for their work at Bolton Wanderers. We wish them all well,” Coyle said.
“One of those is Ricardo Gardner, who has been with the football club for 14 years.
“He has offered incredible service to Bolton Wanderers and I’d like to personally thank him for all of his efforts, particularly during the time I have worked with him.”
Kevin Davies will be staying with the club after signing a new one-year deal.
