Andre Villas-Boas has resigned from Porto ahead of his expected move to Chelsea, the Portuguese champions confirmed on Tuesday.
In a statement to the Portuguese stock market, Porto said Villas-Boas had tendered his resignation and will be released from his contract once a 13.2 million-pound release clause is paid.
“FC Porto was today notified of the intention of Andre Villas-Boas to resign from his contract with the club by triggering the release clause immediately,” the statement read.
“The contract will be terminated once the required amount is paid.”
Early reports had suggested the 33-year-old had personally offered to pay the amount, though those claims have not been confirmed.
What appears certain is Villas-Boas will take over the vacant manager position at English Premier League club Chelsea in the coming days.
The Blues sacked former boss Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the 2010/11 season after he guided the club to second.
Villas-Boas led Porto to a Liga Sagres, Taca de Portugal and Europa League treble this season. He previously served as an assistant under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea from 2004-2007.
His signing could pave the way for key Porto pair Radamel Falcao and Joao Moutinho to follow their manager. Both players have been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge.
