Leeds United defender Leigh Bromby has announced his retirement from professional football, aged 33.

Bromby last featured for United in a Championship match against Cardiff City in April 2012, in which he sustained a serious knee injury.

The centre-back, who joined Leeds in 2009 from Sheffield United, will remain involved at Elland Road though, after being appointed the club’s Under-16 coach.

“It’s become clear over the last 14 months that I wouldn’t be able to continue in a playing capacity and it’s with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to formally retire as a player,” Bromby told the club’s official website.

“The club (Leeds) were good enough to allow me to gain experience last season by working with young players and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to continue that work on a full-time basis now.

“I’ve had a wonderful career, and played for some wonderful clubs, and I wanted to finish at a club I’ve always supported.”

Bromby made 388 career appearances, mainly featuring for Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Watford and Leeds.

He was a key member of the Leeds squad that won promotion from League One in 2009-10, making 39 appearances in all competitions.
