Today I will look at Arsene Wenger’s top choices at centre-back for the Gunners defence.
Wenger’s top five choices, and I use the term “top five” very loosely, in central defence are Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Johan Djourou, and Sebastien Squillaci.
Unfortunately for the Gunners, Djourou and Squillaci have cracked the “top five”.
Belgian star Thomas Vermaelen has suggested that the competition for places at centre-back can only help the Gunners.
“The boss has a lot of choices at the moment, and all of the centre-backs are fit which helps too,” the 26-year-old told the club’s official website.
“There’s a lot of competition and that can only be good for the team.
“It’s good to be able to rest players when they need it, so I don’t think it’s a problem if we have to rotate because we train together all the time.
“We know each other’s qualities, so it doesn’t matter who plays on the day.”
Vermaelen also admitted that he has learned a lot about the art of defending since arriving at the Emirates.
It seems a bit odd to me too, but we have to take his word for it.
“I must say that in the last few years here at Arsenal I have learnt a lot about good positioning,” Vermaelen admitted.
“I’ve also learnt a lot about organisation and talking to the players in front of you, because if you can help them know where they should be as well, it makes your job easier too.
“I think that’s what you learn when you get older.”
We stay in North London as Spurs midfielder Luka Modric has underlined the importance of Tottenham maintaining their good form.
“We’re up to third place and there are hard games coming up,” Modric told the club’s official website.
“We need to keep going and just keep up this momentum. We’re playing well, we’re fighting for each other and we need to keep going.
“We are full of confidence. We’ve won eight games out of nine and that is fantastic form in the Premier League.”
Modric also expressed his satisfaction with Spurs’ performance in their 2-0 win versus Aston Villa on Monday night.
“It was a very important game for us because it was the first game after the international break,” Modric added.
“We were away from each other for a long time and it was important to win.
“Villa have good players, international players with lots of experience, but we showed how much quality we have.”
