Rio Ferdinand has stated on Twitter that he has heard that Chelsea are looking to sign Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.

The former Manchester United central defender believes that it would be quite a coup for his ex-England international teammate Frank Lampard if he is able to bring Messi to Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

As reported by BBC Sport, Messi has asked to leave Barcelona, and has told the Spanish giants that he wants to exercise a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for free with immediate effect.

Brilliant signing for Chelsea

Messi is one of the greatest players in the world and is arguably the best footballer on the planet at the moment.

The Argentina international may be 33 years of age now, but he remains at the top of his game and would make any team in the world better.

Chelsea are a massive club and have a global fanbase, and they also play some wonderful football under manager Lampard.

The Blues have been heavy spenders already this summer, bringing in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner and also likely to sign Kai Havertz as well as Thiago Silva on a free agent.

Chelsea are building a very strong team, and the arrival of Messi would make them instant favourites for the Premier League title next season, with the Blues currently rated at 9/1 third favourites by Betfair to win the championship in 2020-21.
