River Plate needed a penalty shoot-out to beat Canadian side Toronto FC in an international club friendly on Wednesday.

A crowd of just over 20 thousand fans gathered at Toronto’s BMO field to watch their club hold the Argentinian giants to a goalless draw.

Both coaches used the match to test some of their second tier players, the result being that the second half was less entertaining with very few shots on goal.

In the shoot-out, Toronto defender Marco Velez missed the deciding penalty to hand River Plate a 4-3 win.

River Plate’s pre-season tour hasn’t come to an end just yet, as the Buenos Aires outfit face Everton at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday, following a final game against the Impact in Montral on August 4.
