Benfica midfielder Pablo Aimar is nearing a return to River Plate, Portuguese newspaper A Bola has revealed.

The veteran midfielder’s deal at Estadio da Luz is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and it is clear he will not be offered a new contract by the club chiefs.

A Bola understands that River Plate officials have contacted the player’s agent Fernando Felicevich to open talks over a move that would see Aimar return to the club where it all started for him.

The Argentine giants attempted to sign the player last summer, but he eventually opted to extend his Benfica stay for another year.

However, having failed to start a single league game this season, the time has come for Aimar to say goodbye to the Eagles after spending last five years at the club.

At 33, he still has a lot to offer, and no doubt he will be a great signing for River should the transfer go through.
