River Plate are set to launch an assault on Benfica playmaker Pablo Aimar, Argentine newspaper Ole understands.
The Argentine giants suffered a shock relegation to the second division last term, but they are expected to return to the top flight after just one season.
The club chiefs managed to persuade the likes of Leonardo Ponzio, Fernando Cavenaghi, Alejandro Dominguez and David Trezeguet to return from Europe and they are desperate to further reinforce the squad in the summer.
According to Ole, River Plate are weighing up move for Benfica midfielder Pablo Aimar, who is a genuine icon at Estadio Monumental.
The 32-year-old recently extended his contract with Benfica until June 2013, and he has a €20 million release clause inserted in his contract.
This means that the Argentine won’t come cheap should the Eagles decide to sell, although they could lower the asking price if the player expresses his desire to return to River Plate.
The Millionaires are also tracking Gabriel Heinze, Sebastian Leto and Jonas Gutierrez.
