Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer believes Arjen Robben is more of an individualist than a born leader.
But Sammer still feels the Dutchman can play an important role for the Bavarians.
The winger recently said that he was ready to take on more responsibilities at Bayern, and although the 44-year-old sees Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer as the Bundesliga giants’ three biggest personalities, he is adamant that the former Chelsea winger also has a role to play.
“There are three types of players: leaders, team players and individualists. When you have to characterise Robben, he is really more of an individualist,” Sammer told Sport1.
“He is definitely a player who can do something extraordinary for our team with his free spirit and his footballing philosophy.
“He knows how to behave in certain situations and knows when it’s time to step up and speak his mind. So he does have leadership skills, too.
“Lahm, Neuer and Schweinsteiger are Bayern’s three main leaders. These three should not be the only ones with a key role, though, but should also get other important players involved.”
Robben joined Bayern from Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, and has since developed into a key player for the Allianz Arena side.
